A network or IP (Internet Protocol) camera is similar in form and function to an analogue surveillance camera in that it captures and sends live video streams. The difference being network cameras transport live video streams via digital packets across an IP network such as a LAN (Local Area Network) or the Internet. Because network cameras are on an IP network, the video streams can be accessed and stored remotely. This enables users to view and/or manage the network camera using a standard Web browser or video management software from different locations, giving businesses increased flexibility.

Things to remember about Network Cameras
IP Cameras have their own IP address.
They operate independently and can be located wherever there is an internet protocol network connection.
They do not need to be connected to a PC.
Authorised users can also access an IP camera by utilising a network video recorder.
IP network cameras are also capable of video motion detection, audio, and most feature both digital inputs and outputs, and a serial port(s) for serial data or control of PTZ Camera mechanisms.
IP Cameras can be fixed, wireless, outdoor or indoor.
Lighting is essential to any CCTV System. The camera relies on the quantity, quality and distribution of available light as light controls the appearance of the subject.
