Standalone Access Control

Standalone access control systems support either low or medium security applications and are ideal for controlling access on one or many independent doors in a building.

A basic low-level standalone solution is where all of the control electronics are contained in the keypad or reader. These systems are an easy to administer and cost-effective means of controlling access to a building. However, as the control electronics are all housed in the reader or keypad this type of system is not recommended for exterior or high-security doors. These systems are programmed at each individual door and Access is gained by using a numeric code, PIN with a keypad, or by presenting a proximity or magstripe token.

A more secure standalone access control system such as Paxton’s Switch 2 uses a separate control unit which is located on the ‘safe’ side of the door. The control unit is used in conjunction with a reader or keypad. This type of standalone access control is suitable for exterior doors and higher security internal doors. This system is also the right choice if in the future there is a requirement to upgrade to a PC based system as the Readers are compatible with both systems.

Typical Standalone Access Control applications
