Security and Alert systems does not only focus on the development of security devices that would prevent security problems such as theft or robbery rather it includes all aspects of securing the lives of company employees and even the safety of company properties. The purpose of security systems is to protect the assets of the company from outside forces that may prove to be detrimental to such assets making the company lose millions worth of such asset. Thus basing from this premise security systems should also include those that are for fire protection and prevention because such protects the physical assets of the company. The use of fire extinguisher is a basic requirement for every company in order to protect not only the physical assets of the company but also the employees from the dangers of a fire outbreak.

Several problems however are surfacing in terms of use of fire extinguishers, one of which is the failure of the fire extinguisher to function normally especially when the need arises. The nature of a fire extinguisher to be stocked and used only during a fire outbreak makes the device idle and overtime it’s performance or abilities diminish. Another problem resides not in the fire extinguisher itself but with the people using it. Most of the time the users of fire extinguishers or known as fire extinguisher technicians are not well-equipped with the knowledge on how to utilise the device efficiently. This is the reason why SSAIB have added a new scheme to its portfolio known as the portable fire extinguisher scheme. This scheme aims to train and increase the competence of portable fire extinguisher service technicians. The scheme will train the portable fire extinguisher service technicians in the theory of fire, maintenance procedures, health and safety, fire risk, provision and siting of equipments as well as knowing the applicable regulatory and legislative requirements and the British and International Standards. This program will thus increase the confidence level of companies that when the time arises the portable fire extinguisher service technicians would be able to save precious company assets.
