Palmers College can claim to be one of the first Colleges in the UK to update its security system by investing in a networked solution which takes advantage of the latest Full HD camera technology.

Palmer’s has updated its CCTV security system to incorporate the latest High Definition (HD) technology from SANYO. The college which has committed to achieving academic excellence is now equipped with cutting edge security technology to take it forward to the next century.

The college’s analogue camera system was ‘well past its sell by date’ according to Gary Redman, Facilities Manager for Palmer’s College, when he started to look into updating the security system. To ensure the college ended up with a solution that would be fit for purpose today, but also able to cope with the advances in technology to come, Gary retained the services of an independent Security Consultant who advised that he should look for a networked solution.

The Full HD cameras, launched by Sanyo in 2009 have the capability to capture full high definition (1920 x 1080) sharp and crystal clear colour images at 25 frames per second.

Subject to budget availability the college has plans to introduce additional SANYO Full HD cameras to enhance the current coverage, install powered speakers to the cameras to enable remote audio announcements and there is also the ambition to integrate the cameras with the college’s existing intruder alarm system.

In addition Gary Redman is looking at the option to introduce video analytics “Once the second phase of the installation has been completed, we have every intention of utilising the services of a remote monitoring centre to keep an eye on any suspicious activity occurring out of normal college hours, or during holiday periods,” said Gary. “Video analytics will assist in keeping our costs down by ensuring that the monitoring centre only has to react when there is an incident or alarm event such as an attempted burglary.”

It is probable that many colleges and other education establishments would benefit from a review of their existing security systems.  In the first instance they should contact a reputable installation company who can provide them with expert advice.

A Bright Idea

Without light and illumination CCTV is completely ineffectual. Lighting is a pre-requisite for ensuring that video footage is effective on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year. Appropriately designed lighting will have a significant impact on CCTV performance.

The camera relies on the quantity, quality and distribution of available light as light controls the appearance of the subject.

CCTV cameras have the ability to detect light outside the range of the human eye which allows cameras to be used with both White-Light and also Infra Red in night-time surveillance applications.

Security lighting specialists Raytec have recently launched a new Product Selector App to help all security installers, integrators and consultants specify the best CCTV lighting for their project, quickly and easily.

The Product Selector App is available free of charge from iTunes for both iPhone and iPad. It recommends the best Raytec LED lighting product from over 500 in our range, completely removing the complexity of choosing the right unit to achieve tailored, even illumination, matching the project requirements and camera used, for perfect night-time CCTV images.

“It’s a quick and easy, interactive specification tool, designed to allow you to specify lighting on-site, away from your desk”, says David Lambert Raytec’s Sales and Marketing Director. “The user need only enter distance from camera to target, horizontal field of view, desired operating voltage and then select either Infra-Red or White Light. The Product Selector then determines the most efficient and cost-effective solution that will deliver the best results for the specific application each time”.

All Raytec illuminators use state of the art LED technology to improve the performance of any CCTV system, delivering excellent images during the hours of darkness. Raytec illuminators achieve a maximum distance of 370m or 1000m with only 2 units, along with angles from 10-180 degrees which can be altered onsite using the unique Adaptive Illumination™ system to match the beam pattern to the camera field of view.

All Raytec illuminators deliver significantly lower power consumption, longer life and zero maintenance compared to alternative lighting technology, allowing the user to make significant savings in energy, CO2, labour and running costs.
