Have a Very Safe and Secure Christmas

Friday, December 24th, 2010

As you look forward to the Christmas holidays, please remember many criminals regard this time of year as an ideal opportunity to steal from closed business premises.  Please take a few minutes to review our check list and make sure you have a safe Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Perform a thorough security check throughout your premises before locking-up. Switch off lights, computers, photocopiers and other electrical equipment.

Make sure all valuable portable equipment is removed from the site or locked away and remove all cash from the premises, leave till drawers open.  Close blinds and curtains on the ground floor to deter casual thefts.

Makes sure external doors and windows are closed and locked and use a UV marker to identify all of your valuable items. Take with you a copy of the current asset register so that you have to hand information such as model and serial numbers.

Back up your vital data from your computer system and ensure that a full useable copy of your data is securely stored off-site.

If you have staff coming in over the holiday period, ensure that they are familiar with enabling and disabling the alarm systems and know who to contact in case of any issues. Make sure that your key-holder list is up-to-date and if you have an alarm monitoring system, check that the alerts are set-up appropriately and that you have the capability to monitor and respond as needed.

Make sure all perimeter fences, security lighting, gates and locks are in good order. It is also very important to check that your CCTV cameras and recording equipment are all working properly. Finally test both your intruder and fire alarm systems.

In the external area park vehicles securely and do not leave the keys on the premises and keep yards clear of items such as pallets, packing material and scrap metals. Secure any waste bins as they can be used to start fires, or to gain access to the building.

Finally everybody at Alert Systems would like to wish you a very safe and secure Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

The Season of Goodwill to All Men?

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

The Christmas season is vital for many retailers, with weekly sales increasing between 40% and 100%.  Unfortunately Christmas is also the time when thieves and shoplifters are also most active and it is vital that retailers take precautions to protect their merchandise.

The Centre for Retail Research estimates that this Christmas, UK retailers will lose £980 million an increase of £36 million on 2009.

Shoplifting = £620 million
Employee theft = £ 284 million
Supply chain fraud = £ 76 million

This means that crime this Christmas will cost every person in the UK an average of £16.07, in Europe only Ireland and Norway have a higher average cost.

The survey also reveals that two-thirds of all offenders are less than 30 years old, with an even split between males and females.  The average value of a shoplifted item is £87.72

The Christmas period is a peak season for shoplifting as large crowds means there is less chance of being noticed and there is high demand for expensive goods. The most stolen products during the Christmas period are expected to be:

  1. Alcohol
  2. Women’s clothing
  3. Fashion accessories
  4. Perfume
  5. Gift sets
  6. Health and beauty products
  7. Male toiletries
  8. Electronic items – games consoles
  9. Sportswear
  10. Festive Food items

Retailers need to make sure that their security systems are properly maintained and are in full working order.

They should ensure that all of their staff members are aware of the risk from theft and are trained to look out for suspicious behaviour.  Retailers should also make sure that expensive merchandise is not located close to entrances and also keep a clear sight line throughout the retail environment.

In difficult economic times more people will be tempted to turn to shoplifting to maintain a lifestyle, but this coincides with a decline in retail sales. Excessive thefts could result in small and medium sized businesses being forced out of business.

More than ever it is now the responsibility of every retailer to protect their business from damaging losses. The first step is to contact a professional security company to review existing procedures and highlight any areas for improvement. Modern security systems are now highly effective and affordable through a number of financing options including tax efficient leasing schemes.
